Graduate of San Francisco's Academy of Art University Wins Grand Prize in Annual SURTEX Designext Competition
The Grand Prize winner in the 2013 designext international student competition organized annually by SURTEX, the leading trade show for the art and design market, is Hye Jung In of Seoul, Korea, a December graduate in Textile Design at the Academy of Art University (San Francisco, CA).
Penny Sikalis, Vice President of GLM and Manager of the SURTEX show, announced the award at the show held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Hye Jung In was one of four top student winners in the competition, long a highlight of the annual B-to-B marketplace, now in its 27th year.
The Grand Prize comes with a $1000 cash award and a golden opportunity to accelerate a professional career. Hye Jung In used imagery of Marrakesh, Morocco gleaned from travel photos of the city, its architecture and markets. The judges noted her sensitivity to surface, pattern and design for the global market in her submission and her portfolio.
Artists, designers, studios, agents and licensing firms selling and licensing art and design for a multitude of product end-uses: decorative fabrics, linens and domestics, contract textiles, wall coverings, floor coverings, apparel textiles, stationery, greeting cards, gift wrap and other paper products, tabletop, giftware, toys, ceramics, packaging and publishing were on hand. The event also launched "Atelier," where talented textile design studios from around the world sold their most trend-forward surface designs to a multitude of product categories. Arranged in an intimate, yet open floor plan, the "Atelier" is for a broad range of manufacturers – interior textiles, fashion fabrics, wall coverings, paper, and more – seeking the latest prints, patterns, repeats, documents, and design services for product development needs.
